Carbon credits and Blue Carbon projects

2021 - ongoing

One of the key research focuses of the Foundation is to develop and encourage blue carbon projects, an important method of sequestering atmospheric carbon. Blue carbon projects are in their infancy in Australia but a little further advanced in other locations globally. The Foundation and Khaki Investments, a key supporter of the Foundation, are investing in fledging blue carbon projects in a few locations.

In Mexico, Blue MX is an investment project aimed at protecting and restoring at least 167,000 ha of coastal wetlands and in so doing is aiming to generate carbon credits. Implementation is being undertaken by a network of private sector, NGO’s, Government and indigenous partnerships. In addition, investments have been made into a fund that is developing a portfolio of verified carbon credits that, amongst other objectives, aims to protect and restore nature by investing in projects that deliver co-benefits not only to forests, grasslands and wetlands but also to the people who rely on them.

We believe that authentic and verifiable carbon credits are the only practical current solution to offset atmospheric carbon pollution from a range of industries such as airlines, cement producers, etc.

The Foundation is currently closely considering a major investment into research and restoration of seagrass and possible blue carbon credits in Shark Bay.
